Fred Gordon owns The Distillery in South Boston, which includes an old factory from the 1860’s where the Felton family made rum. It has been a living and working space for about 100 artists since 2004. On part of the site, he built the first multi-family Passive House in Boston, 26 apartments finished in 2007. It remains the most energy efficient multi-family building in Massachusetts. It is also Leed Platinum +9. He has become increasingly interested in the relation between buildings and health and has innovated ventilation equipment which performs far beyond existing air quality standards, while cutting energy use even lower. He plans to extend these concepts to a new 60 residential apartments to be constructed on a remaining section of the site. He has no training whatsoever in architecture or construction, but does have a degree from Harvard and a PhD from the University of California, San Diego, for work in 19th century German philosophy
