Coming together to work towards building a sustainable future
The United States has set a goal of reaching net-zero emissions economy-wide by 2050. To help reach this goal, the new administration has a plan to upgrade 4 million existing buildings over the next 4 years to create jobs, tackle climate change, improve air quality, and save money long-term.
Retrofitting buildings is vital to reduce emissions, save money, and create jobs. According to a 2020 report by the ACEEE, retrofitting buildings to reduce their energy use is one of the most powerful tools to reduce carbon emissions. Improving buildings’ efficiency can help with the current climate crisis while reducing air pollution.
Approximately 44% of the commercial building stock and 67% of the housing inventory in 2050 will be buildings that were built in 2019 or earlier (EIA 2020; Nadel and Ungar 2019), therefore retrofitting existing buildings must be a key strategy to incur energy savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Some cities in the U.S. have started setting energy standards for buildings and are working with owners to help them achieve these new standards. This conference will explore case studies, government policies, and technology solutions to help attendees understand the scope of retrofitting buildings, benefits, best practices, and the costs involved.
