HVAC energy accounts for approximately half of the energy use in commercial buildings. “Smart” pressure independent control valves (PICV) have the potential to significantly improve the energy performance of these intensive energy uses in commercial buildings. Smart valves are defined here as pressure-independent control valves with on-board electronics that can accurately and stably control air handling unit (AHU) supply air temperature (SAT) via superior variable flow control. The objective of this project was to demonstrate the energy savings performance and usability of smart valves as an HVAC retrofit.
